Interpreting the Bubble Charts

There are several bubble charts that help visualize important trends among your pathways in order to identify important outliers.

The first two bubble charts demonstrate the relationship between Productivity Ratio and Time to Degree, while the bottom demonstrates the relationship between Total Velocity and Time to Degree.

In this example institution, we can see a large correlation between Time to Degree and Productivity Ratio. This may be a hint that focusing on quality course choices is more important than quantity.

On the left, the relationship by Pathway is demonstrated, and the right represents the relationship by when the Student started attending your institution. The bubbles on the right represent the starting term.

Bubble Color

The colors on the right represent the starting year and may help highlight trends across the starting year. If your colors are showing similar patterns you may be able to find persistent issues in terms; for example, there may be differences in student success between Fall and Spring admits.

Bubble Size

Bubble size across all four visualizations helps represent the number of students. This may help identify higher impact interventions; for example, a smaller bubble further out of the trend may not have as big of an impact across an institution as a larger bubble only slightly out of the trend.

How the Bubble Charts Work Together

The charts also work together when you select a bubble to drill into. Selecting a Pathway on the left side will update the graph on the right to only represent students inside that pathway. Similarly, selecting a Term on the right will update the graph on the left to only represent students who started on that term.

This may be helpful when investigating certain cohorts that are further outside of the trend; highlighting on pathway can show what Terms those students started or highlighting a term can show what Pathway those students are struggling with.
