Cross-listed sections are sections that meet in the same room at the same time with one or more other sections. The cross-list relationship may be useful for institutional reporting, but is needed primarily so that room scheduling conflicts can be enforced properly.
Typical examples for the use of cross-listing include:
- Different departments offering credit for the same class (e.g. 20th Century Art is offered for credit as Art 550 and History 330).
- Different courses meeting in the same room (e.g. Painting I and Painting III meet in the same studio at the same time).
- Different sections of the same course meeting in the same room at the same time (e.g. Biology 110 Lecture, Sections 1-10 all meet in the same auditorium at the same time).
Course sections that are cross-listed are identified through their association with the same cross-list code. When viewing section information, sections that are cross-listed will display both their cross-list code and any sections with which they are cross-listed in the record details.
Cross-list coding (the information that defines which sections are cross-listed) is generally maintained in and imported from a student information system along with all of the other academic term data. However, the cross-list relationships may also be manually manipulated if required.
When editing cross-list group information manually, the cross-list group max enrollment value and group membership may be edited and locked so that future imports will not impact changes you have made. This allows users to manually control the cross-list group if the information is not configured as needed in the student information system.
Lock Enrollment
This option freezes the cross-list group max enrollment value so that it will not be updated by an import process. The value must be maintained manually.
Lock Group
This option freezes the cross-list group membership so that it will not be updated by an import process. The group members must be maintained manually.
Cross-List Enrollment Rules
The cross-list group's max enrollment value is used to determine the appropriate room size during scheduling. There are three options for populating this value:
- Import the cross-list group max enrollment directly from your student information system.
If your student information system contains a cross-list group max enrollment, the import configuration file query must be configured to pull this value from the correct place in your SIS. - Add up the max enrollments of the members of the cross-list group.
This option must be set in the System Settings on the Settings tab. - Use the largest single max enrollment value from among the members of the cross-list group.
This option must be set in the System Settings on the Settings tab.
Ad Astra's support staff can assist you with these import configuration options.
